Ok,
You all know I rebuilt the DS, 11.5 piston, a1/a2 cams, rw valve springs, rw cdi, lectron 46 carb, 60% springs, ported intake, HMF exhaust. Before I did that I had the old bolt on setup with the tm carb. When I was in 5th gear I could never seem to rev past 7,000 Rpms.. I had 15/40 22 tires. So that was about 70 mph.. I then went to the 14 front as sugested by another person that had the same issues. Then I was able to rev to 8k or 75 mph..
OK, After the rebuild
WITH 15/40/22 gearing I rev out at 8000 in 5th @ 80ish.. the other gears reve to 9ish..I only gaind 100 rpms on top???? WTF?
Ok, I tried it with 14/40/22 and I rev out at 9700 @ 92 mph.. ?? wow? I dont understand it??
Does haveing 1 tooth really LOSE that much power?
How do you 17/40/22 people do it?? or dont you? WHen you drage race do you ever rev out in 5th? or just like 2-3 gears??
I am really confused on how this performs.. I liked the yank your arms feeling with the 14. It felt better all around then the 15!
With 15/40/22 its OVER stock gearing by like 1/2 a tooth.
with 14/40/22 its UNDER stock gearing by like 1/2 a tooth..
man, I really want to go back to 20" and stock gearing.....

WIND RESISTANCE!!!
Those race cams dont start making thier power till the upper RPM's, but with the taller gearing your quad is not pulling hard enough to overcome the wind resistance.
If you were to take off your rear plasics, and heel guards, you will be able to pull the 15 tooth spoket! past 92 MPH. Also thier could be a little more "ttweaking" to do in that carb, you could try to slightly lean out the mid range to help over come the wind!!!
besides, 80+ is tooooooo FAST! slow down and Live to be 30!! LOL!!

Yo Mud, I run 15/40 20" tires, can only rev to 9300 in fifth. pretty much around your same scenario.
the smaller front sprockets are easier for the motor to turn - its all about "leverage". some people think that larger fronts make it easier on the motor because of "leverage", but its backwards - a bigger sprocket is using that "leverage" AGAINST the motor. small fronts is the way to go. If I put on 22" rears, I'd definitely be running a 14T front, which I do in the dunes.

wit the 17 or 16 i can't hit the limiter, the 16 will get round 7200, 17 only gets 2 like 6500, i'm not worried about that, that way i can tease my buddies "jeeze i'm only revin to 6.5 and i'm beatin ya wen ur revin to 9"
