I just got this bike and it will only run with the choke on. Also when letting it idle high with the choke on it will suddenly act like the throttle is stuck wide open and I have to kill the motor. Any help is very appriciated.

 

It sounds like it is running lean (thats why you need to choke it) and then when it finally runs outta fue that is when it zings way up. Check the fuel shut off valve flow and clean the screen in the tank. Also, tear the carb down and clean it with carb cleaner. Be sure to spray it through all the ports in the carb body. Also check your cylinder base gasket, carb boot, reed cage gaskets. A leak in any of those places could cause what your trike is doing. Just a suggestion, you may be better off getting a new carb, assuming it is the stock carb it is at least 17 years old.

I remember know that you say gas vavle that it did seem a little beat up. I had it out before. Would something like that cause it to zing out all of a sudden?IT is a mikuni carb or something i'm not sure of the spelling. Great info. i'll get to work.

 

Another thing to check is your pilot or slow jet. I just picked up a 1985 350X and it would also only run with the choke on. I tore down the carb and checked the jets and sure enought the pilot was clogged. I couldn't even see through it. I replaced it with the rebuild kit I had and it runs like a brand new one.
