Default Clutch Question

Okay, I pull the clutch in but it won't disengage the gears. I figured it was the clutch plates cause I already adjusted the clutch cable all the way out with no success. Well I torn it down and I have no idea what the plates/fibers are suppose to look like or if the problem lies somewhere else. I could really use a little help on this.

Thanks in advance.

Default Clutch Question

well it could be a few things causing this. how much freeplay is in the clutch lever? if there's too much it won't disengage fully. sounds like you took care of that. second, has the bike been sitting for a long time? sometimes the clutch plates stick together and won't disengage. you can take the plates apart, put some oil on them and put them back in to fix that. third, the clutch basket fingers could be heavily grooved which doesn't allow the plates to separate when you pull in the clutch. you can file the grooves down, or get a new basket. as far as the plates and discs go, the plates (metal) should be flat with no warping or heat discoloration. the discs (fiber) should have some material left on them, there's a spec. but not sure what. remember when you put them back in always start with a disc (fiber) and end with a disc, alternating in between with the plates. also the early 250r motors have a clutch pushrod update kit from honda that replaces the throwout ball/lifter with a needle bearing. the old style can cause the lever adjustment to go out pretty quick.

Default Clutch Question

Well you answered a few questions for me. Yes the trike has been sitting for years and the plates seem to be stuck together when i pulled them out. The other thing is you said start with Fiber and then steel. Mine started out steel then fiber..... I will just the service manual for the correct setting on this. The fiber doesn't not look worn and everything else looks to be in good shape... I will try and gte some pics of it tonight.... I think it is better when we can all see what I am looking at. Thanks for you help.

Default Clutch Question

Thanks for your help. I haven't had time to look at it. that probably explains why the clutch wasn't working.
