Default Shifting problems?

I bought a 85 Honda 250R and was told the clutch was bad. When I got it home i was able to get it runnuing and actually rode it around the yard. The clutch seemed to engage just fine going into first. But when I tried to go from second to third the gear shifter lever didn't rebound from the upward shift into second therefore i couldn't get third to engage. My question is if the clutch is bad is the shift lever not going to move through the gears very well when bike is not running. With chain off it is fairly hard to get it into nuetral and the other gears. The gear shifter wants to stay in the upward position after each shifting attempt through 2nd-5th gear. Any help welcome

Default Shifting problems?

Possible return spring on the shift shaft may be put together wrong. Also if they had it apart they may have inserted the shift shaft incorectly and the spring is not allowd to work as it should. Take off the side case and make sure that the shift shaft fork is in the correct position and the spring is correct. The spring attaced to the shaft could be spent not letting the shaft to return to the 'middle position' Put a new clutch plates and springs in the bastard too.
