Rod Problems with raptor.....
#1
if there is anyone that has had rod failure from their raptor please tell me a little bit about your setup, as well as, your problem.........
I am thinking about going from 11:1 to 12:1 compression and I don't know if it is is worth the risk of rod failure.......but from what I hear, if it is done correctly (bored and honed cylinder to piston specs......and jetted properly) there will be no failure......
how many of you have 12:1 or higher compression raptors?.........what else have you don'e to it?....and what problems have you had out of it?

I have a 12:1 (static closer to 13:1) on a stock rod and haven't had any problems. Craycraft bored the cylinder to match the piston specs, I think that's the key to keeping the rod intact. The majority of rod problems with high compression pistons are on 01s and stock bores, maybe something with the 01 rod angle and/or folks not having the cylinder bored for the new piston. You can't just throw a new piston in the stock bore, it must be bored for proper clearance with a forged piston.
The only problem I had with my high compression engine was the stock carbs and needle valve/float arrangement. With race gas, I could not keep the needle valve sealed and ended up with a bad bog just off idle due to a flooded idle circuit. FCRs fixed that problem:-)
Depending on your perspective, keeping the front end down might be considered a problem but I'm not complaining.

I agree with ubetrun,my racing buddy has a 12:1 in his Raptor and hasn't had a rod failure in either the '01 or '02 bottom ends he had the piston on.He used the piston about 4 months in the '01 and a year and a half at least on the '02.Also he beats it mercilessly, anything for a win.I swear that boy has been through 12 clutches.
