Yes you will need a drill that will turn at least 2500 rpm if you are using a 8" polishing wheel. Check out Jestco Polishing.com or English Custom Polishing. Both sites have step by step instructions as well as the proper tools to use etc. Polishing is like a art form either you have it or you dont.

I use hollywood polish carried by G.I Joes for light polishing. It comes in a cotton wadding like neverdull only better plus you can get different grades. Harbor Freight carries a cheap dual wheel polisher like a grinder only the wheels extend out for polishing inside weels.

The best bet is to use an actual bench polisher. I have an 8 inch and it works great. Also the more hp the better because most grinders tend to bog. You have the keep the heat up to get a good shine with minimal effort, but watch it because you can burn the metal. Also a Sisal wheel ( which is like a wheel made from rope) and a Black emory compound is the best combo for fast cutting. Then I switch to a tight sewn wheel and the Black compound , Then I use a Medium sewn wheel with a Brown compound , then I finish up with with a loose wheel and green compound. Keep in mind these are the steps i take to polish aluminum. There are different ways to polish different metals. Hope this helps. Oh and by the way my dad used to own a polishing and chroming shop.
