Fourlix Outlander clutch noise?
#1
Hello! Had to register and weigh in on this topic. I've got two Outlander 330's 2x4(2003 model). Please tell me if the noise that I describe, is what you hear with regard to the CVT. The red quad which I got first makes this particular noise. I got the green quad about a month later and it does not make this noise. Here goes...when the red quad is running and in neutral, if I rev it up, just before it returns to idle I hear one knock or firm rap sound. I have not removed the CVT cover yet, but I think the noise comes from that area. This noise does not seem to affect the performance. When you were trying to diagnose the noise, did you run the engine with the primary(drive) clutch completely removed to eliminate an engine noise? I have several theroies-trust me I'm no expert! 1) The inside of the EBS collor is dry. The EBS collor is between the two sheaves(of primary) and provides the engine braking. The service manual says the inside of the EBS collor must be lubricated with anti-seize compound. 2. The sliding sheave is binding and releasing or traveling to far. Perhaps there is a shim or some part missing. What do you think? Sorry to be long winded, but this noise really bugs me. I don't have any of the specialized clutch removal tools yet. Thanks to all for any advice.

Hi there Flatlander. We tried the clutch from another machine that didn't make the noise and it made the same noises on this one. The clutch noise seems to be the symptom, not the problem itself. We smoothed it and lubed it as you describe, both clutches make noise on the one machine, not on the other. I think it may be the crank out of balance which throws the clutch to one side so it is out of balance and therefore jumps over and makes a huge noise. We're sending the motor to Bombardier, I'm just tired of f@#king with it. Yours doesn't sound like it is as bad as this one, this makes all kinds of noises, it is downright scary to ride. But we didn't try it with no clutch at all, I think it is hard to get the starter to work without the clutch and flywheel being on, but not sure.
I am just so glad that I got another one to the customer, this baby is a nightmare. I'm sure we'll get a good motor back from Bombardier and I think my parts guy will end up with this machine, hopefully with some kind of discount from Bombardier.

Hey fourlix! Being new to this forum, I didn't realize you were a dealer. Hope I didn't insult your intelligence. It seems that our noises are different. Any idea what might be causing what I described? Have any of your customers had this issue? Anybody out there with an Outlander have this noise? Thanks.

sxr6,
Didn't you mention a few months back that you fixed a clutch noise on your Outlander by adjusting the idle. I can't remember if your idle was to high or low. I haven't tried that yet because I don't have a tachometer of any kind. The Outty runs pretty good, I'm kind of afraid to mess with it. From what I've described in this thread is that the noise and condition that you had. I've been eyeing that Tiny Tach-simple to hook up and fairly cheep. Any experiance with it?
