Default 400 Sportsman - Got one ? Had one?

Looking at buying an 04 400 Sportsman. Whats the weak items or trouble spots if any? How does it compare with other 4wd's you have been around?

This would be my first 4wd ATV, any pointers would be helpful.

Thanks !

Denny

Have had my 400 for about 4 months now with almost 50 hrs. on it It is a great riding machine but the power is lacking I had this one at my uncles ranch last week and we rode with there 425 magnums and it just flat left them like they were standing still. Only prob. I have had so far was set up for hi altitude it was a complete dog until the clutched it and rejetted for altitude.

Good luck

I just got a 2004 Sportsman 400 today. So far I've driven it about 12 miles, and I haven't had any problems what-so-ever. I topped out at about 45-50 mph on a level gravel road (with AWD on - haven't tried it yet with it off). The ride is really comfortable, and it accelerates relatively quickly. While I was driving along in the ditch beside the road, I got down in this low spot by mistake, and tried to back out. On the first try my wheeles spun because it was rather steep. On the second try, I held down the over drive button, and I backed out of it like it was nothing. I would recommend it - it's a really solid ATV.

If it's not a $$$ issue,.. The 500 H.O. is a much better quad,.. there really is a ton of diff in the performance for not a lot more dollars,.. and resale will more than make up for the extra out-of-pocket you will need.

I would have to agree with anchorman. I recently purchaced a 500 h.o. over the 400 because of the power to weight ratio. extra money was well worth it. I love the machine so far. It has plenty of power and will go faster than a quad of this size really should be going. topped mine out @ 58 mph. If you buy make sure you get the 04.5 it has a lot of improvements over the 04's, unless the dealer is willing to give you an unbeatable deal on the 04 (many100's less).
Hope this helps and enjoy the ride.
