If the front end engagement is due to the rear wheel spinning and loss of traction why would it not engage the front wheels when coming down hills or steep hills I kinda think the reason is that you don't get true wheel spin when coming down a steep hill but I would like to hear it explained...

I would say that you are not truely loosing traction coming down hill you aren't really spinning the tires. If you do lose traction you aren't increaseing the speed of tires only the grip, for 4x4 to kick in you would need to increse the spin or speed of rear tires,vs the front.CM

I beleive you would get wheel slide, when going down steep hills, rather then wheel spin which would mean that the rear wheels would be rotating slower then the front. This situation would be the opposite of front end engagement which requires the rear wheels to rotate faster then the front. Hope this helps.

I was told from my dealer, that the 4x4 doesnt engage until the rear wheels slip an 1/8 of a revelution faster than the front

There are some more answers to your question at another post called "How to "HOTWIRE" Polaris "All-wheel drive" for True 4-wheel drive? "
