Not sure about the Kodiak, but if it is like a honda you cannot take the spark arestor out, what you took out is the silencer pack..no harm

Harm? Some harm can occur to your pocketbook, if your exhaust fails a ranger's inspection in the National Forest. Further, if the Allegheny National Forest burns down, just after you've ridden through with that cool-sounding exhaust, who do you think faces criminal negligence, or more severe, charges? Whether or not your quad started the fire?

You might consider these risks against the gain of a cool sound and presumed marginal performance increase.

This is a good topic.
I recently repacked an FMF silencer for an 86 250 r and was surprised it was stamped an official spark arestor. Having only a turbine fluted core besides the noise packing. Giving sparks a clear path out of the exaust.

On a Honda 400ex, The spark arestor is a fine mesh screen which clearly blocks any sparks from exiting the quad.

So I guess my question would be, What is the rated legal standard for a US forest service spark arestor? And where would these legal facts be found? With blue prints.

The Forest Service operates the world's only spark arrestor testing facility at San Dimas, CA (909) 599-1267.

I imagine the Forest Service publishes a manual or standard on spark arrestor design, construction and testing, shared with muffler manufacturers; the San Dimas facility can probably provide you the reference or information you want.
