I've gone back in the forums but not found a clear answer to this. How hard is it to change out the stock carb on a 2004 Sportsman 700 to a 38mm TMX Flatside carb??? Are there any modifications to be made or is it pretty much an easy swap? Thanks.

 

Mark, I have a stock 02 SP 700, was wondering what mods are out there for better all around performance? I have read some of your posts and you seem to know what youre talking about. Thanks

I'm certainly no expert but I can tell you what mods that have worked for me personally on my 04 Sportsman 700. I recently installed a Team Performance rapid reaction secondary clutch and at the same time changed out the primary clutch spring and weights that I purchased from Hot Seat Performance. As far as the decision of which spring and weights I used, I left that up to Hot Seat. Those guys are the real experts and were great to deal with. I was very impressed with the results. The up shifting and back shifting is absolutely flawless and quick. There was also a definite increase in acceleration. Outside of tooling around in a field and down some dirt roads I have not had a chance to get technical out on the trails with this setup yet but I'm sure I'll be happy. I have recently been researching a flatside carb for my 700 but I have not come to a decision yet. As far as other mods I guess you could look into aftermarket pipes and performance exhausts but some feel that you don't get a real bang for your buck from performance exhausts on a 4 stroke. I gotta think though, if you make sure the carb is jetted properly after installing a better less restrictive exhaust you will see a difference. The other thing I did was put in a K&N air filter. I did this when I first got my 700 so I can't compare it to the stock filter but no one will dispute the K&N "breaths" better than the stock filter. Other than that do a search on this and other ATV forums and you will learn a lot fom these guys (after you sift through the usual BS you are bound to find). Also talk to the guys at Hot Seat and HPD. They can steer you in the right direction when it comes to wringing out all that your machine can offer.

 

I have ran a 38mm flat slide on my 03 700. Pulled it off cuz it was running a bit to rich and I didn't have enuf time to fine tune it( project for the next summer). I bought it as a kit from Aaen and it was real easy to install. Pluss the carb is alot easier to work on also then the stock carb. Could feel a defenet performance improvement.

Now the EFI is out for the 700sp why dont you wait to see if you can buy the EFI in a kit.

 

Thanks for the input guys. It's good to hear the carb change out is pretty easy to install (carbs are NOT my specialty). With all this SP 700 EFI news floating around I think I will check into the possibility of switching mine over but if that doesn't pan out (time wise or $$$$ wise) I can always jump back to the flatside carb. Thanks again!
