440ex to 465ex????

ok i just had a 440 kit installed on my 400ex now i am wondering if when it comes time to rebuild the top end again would it be possible to bore it to a 465 without replacing the sleeve????

with a bore to 465, you will be risking meltdown..what you want to do is keep your 440, and put in a stroker crank. With that crank you can get all different displacements, the most popular being a 465 or 505.

465 isn't usually a bore job. it usually involves stroking. if you have a 440 sleeve right now chances are your not at an actual 440cc's yet. you probably have a bore or 2 left in the sleeve cuz when you get them their not usually a true 440 until the last bore. call the maker of your piston and your sleeve to make sure.

Some 465 kits are big bores only. If I remember correctly it was a 92 mm bore. Yes, that figures up to 465. It would require a special sleeve and you have to bore the cases to accomodate the sleeve.
From the little bit I've seen, a big bore 465 is quicker than a 465 stroker. I have had the opportunity to ride a 465 big bore and it is quite a runner. For your purposes, I would say that it would not be worth the money to step up to a 465 big bore because you would be re-doing everything you already have. The stroker would probably be your best bet.

thanks for all the information, when it comes time to rebuild the top end i'll just keep it a 440, a stroker crank would be nice but i just had a hotrod connecting rod installed and that cost enough

if you wanna freshen up the top end you probably don't even need to bore. just throw a new piston and rings in there and she'll be good as new. thats assuming of course that the sleeve is in good shape
