New Year’s Resolutions for Recreational Access – 2004
#1
1. Volunteer – help fix a trail, pick up garbage. This is self-explanatory, for the need is great.
2. Take a Friend for a ride in a Park. Some people are actually afraid to participate in outdoor recreation and a little encouragement never hurts.
3. Write a thank-you note to your local public lands management office. Let them know you appreciate the work they do for public recreation.
4. Try a new form of recreation. If you always go ATVing, try mountain biking. If you always ride a horse, try a motorcycle.
5. Smile when paying user fees that support and maintain recreation areas. We are not suggesting that you smile when you pay your income tax. At least with a user fee, you have a pretty good idea where the money is going.
6. Clean out your garage so you can actually use your recreational equipment! There are probably other reasons to clean out your garage, but we thought this reason would provide you with the best motivation!
7. Tune up any motorized vehicles you have so they run better and cleaner. This is a no brainer. We all benefit from cleaner machines.
8. Become active on recreational policy issues. Remember, the anti-access folks want to keep you off public lands. Unless you become active on these issues, the other side has a better chance of succeeding!
9. Strike up a conversation with an anti-access person. Let them know you’re human, that you love this country, and that you recreate responsibly.
10. Participate in the ARRA registration contest and maybe win a prize by signing up the highest number of new registrants.
