Warn Winch - Solenoid & Control Placement
#1
Got a new DUSE Sportsman last week - what a blast!
I'm mounting the winch and looking for suggestions on best location for the solenoid and the control switch. Also, does the 500 Sportsman have a terminal board?
Thanks for the help!

I HAD MY DEALER INSTALL MY WINCH.
HE CHARGED ME $150. I FELT I WAS REALLY TAKING ADVANTAGE OF HIM CAUSE I WOULD NOT HAVE DONE IT FOR $150. THEY MOUNTED THE SELONID UNDER THE SEAT NEAR THE BATTERY BOX . NOT AT THE BOX ,APROX. 6-8 INCHES FOR THE STORAGE BOX. THE WINCH CONTROL WAS MOUNTED ON THE LEFT FRT. FENDER APROX. 6 INCHES FROM THE RACK. YES THEY DRILLED A SMALL HOLE IN THE PLASTIC JUST ENOUGH TO GET THE WIRES THROUGH. HAVEN'T HAD TO USE MY WINCH YET,BUT THE CONTROL IS IN A POSITION THAT I CAN STAND TO THE SIDE AND CONTROL THE WINCH,AS WELL AS TRYING TO STEER MY SPORTSMAN .
HOPE THIS HELPS ,IF I CAN GET MY SCANNER UP AND RUNNING I CAN E-MAIL SOME OF THE INSTALL PHOTOS TO YOU.
HOPE THIS HELPS.

I installed the soledoid under the seat as I did not want mud on it. I mounted the switch on the left handlebar. I looked at mounting it on the fender, but I use it to plow snow and I need to run it with one hand and run the gas with the other. The installation process is not hard, just time consuming.

When i bought both of my yellow Sportsman I had the dealer mount it, the control switch is on the left handlebar its nice there no bending over, and what is the solenoid is it the small round thing with the red wires coming out of it? Because that is by my battery. And when i turn the key in the ignition there is a weird sound (not a bad sound) but it is by the battery i think it is the solenoid..... Does anyone else hear the same sound i hear, its auctualy a pleasent sound nothing offensive.

I installed my solinoid in the carboard box it came in i don,t use them and never will again i hook the winch direct and never havv had a problem this way there is no drilling no extra connections to fail and alot less headach to install . If any one needs a spare solinoide i have plenty to get rid of.

The sound you are hearing from the solenoid is normal. It is the solenoid energizing the rest of the system when the key is turned on. The time to worry is when no clicking sould is heard!!!

I’m with Jamie on this one. With all four winches I’ve owned and installed the solenoids have been installed in the big round metal barrel that gets emptied every Wednesday (alright, I kept a couple in case I ever wanted to use them on something OTHER than a winch). All my winches have been wired direct to the battery without a single failure or problem in seven years. In my opinion a winch is a failsafe, something you use as a last resort. It’s a piece of equipment you don’t use often but when you need it it had better be there and working. A means to that end is to wire it as simply as possible. The less complicated it is the greater its dependability.
My winch switch is mounted to the body plastic of my SP500 to the left of the gas tank as high as possible without interfering with the turning of the headlight pod. This way I can run the throttle with my right hand and operate the winch with my left. Works good for raising and lowering the snow blade too.
