iam currently running a 14 tooth front sprocket on my warrior and the top speed and acceleration is perfect for the riding i do but the stock tires aren't perfect so i was considering going down to 20" razrs on the rear what size front sprocket will i need to keep the top speed where it is now if i change the tires

in order to keep the speed with a smaller tire, you will need to go up one tooth in the front

 

One inch in rear tire size equals 1 tooth on rear sprocket.

Example. You go from 20 inch tires to 22 inch tires. To keep stock gear ratios, you need to drop 2 teeth on the rear sprocket.

 

Maddog, isn't it the other way around? Reducing rear tire size would require reducing rear sprocket size to keep same ratio? Drop one tooth for every inch the tire is smaller. Educate me if I'm wrong......

west, your right. But, maddog said go up tire size for his example. If you go down tire size, you can go down rear sprocket size. You can also go up front sprocket size. ShavO, what sprocket do you run? I have 18" holeshot mxr's and found i lost a lot of top end speed.

 

If you go from 20 to 22" tires, I don't think you'd want to drop 2 teeth off the rear.... unless you want to lose accelaration. (prolly a mistype in his example).

sorry about all the confusion. when you drop teeth on the rear, you gear for more top end. So in my example of changing from 20 to 22 inch tires, you would need to gear down. That means adding 2 teeth to the rear.

Its a confusing topic when you start thinking about it. But its easy to remember if you think of your quad as a mountian bike. When the gears are big in the back then its got bottom end but not alot of top, and vice versa. Bigger tires will give you more speed but less snap. Spoony, If you put on 18'' tires, then you lost some speed defently. In order to get back what you had before you need to reduce the snap and add to the top end. You can do this by adding a tooth to the front or taking 2 off the back. Its tricky to try and figure it all out when you are dealing with front/rear sprockets as well as the tire size. The best way to do it is figure out what you lost by changing the tire size and then compensate with the sprockets.

I run with 20''razr's and 14/42. WHen i went down i tire size i added 2 teeth to regain what i had lost as well as i exta tooth to give it more bottom end.
