Default oil problem?

I just bought a '01, kind of the same situation, it was the original owner and not ridden much. The first thing I did was change the oil and filter, then I know I should be OK. To answer your question I don't know what the white stuff might be, but check it after you run with new oil. Where in Mass do you ride???

The white stuff is either coolant from a leaking water pump shaft seal, leaking head gasket or it is simply condensation.

Take off the dipstick and look down the fill tube area. If it has a lot of this stuff you probably have a leaking water pump shaft seal.

Check your coolant level (including res. tank) then take it out for a ride. If it has dropped then we are still leaning towards the water pump shaft seal.

There is a weep hole that drains out the bottom of the engine near where the starter is located (If you don't know where the water-pump is). Take it out for a ride when you come back park it right in the garage or on some dry sand or something that will show any drips.

If leaks show, you need to replace the water pump shaft and shaft seals. DO replace the shaft.

I don't know if Bomb offers a kit (with the impeller already mounted) if they don't go to your local BMW dealer and get the kit for the F650 (mounting that impeller on the shaft is a pain in the A$$.

More info can be found Here (F650)

This engine is the same engine that has been used in the F650 Motorcycle for years!

Send me a PM if you need a phone number to guide you through this.

Default oil problem?

When I bought my 2001 DS a few months ago i had the same problem (oil wasn't milky or anything just some white residue). I changed the oil and it still didn't go away. Rode for a few mpre weeks and the water pump started to leak. Fixed the water pump changed the oil and its fine know.
