New user w/ds baja
#1
Hey all, I just purchased a 2003 ds650 baja. It was a brand new one left over and i was able to take it home for 5300.00. Not to bad or so I thought. I grew up on ATV's but this one is all new to me. I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas for upgrades and just maintaining the machine. Thanks

The best thing to do would be to search the old posts and there is a lot of info in there.
Overview:
Hop-ups. Mr.HP endcap for exhaust, Lectron 46hv carb, big bore kits, cams, intake porting, NOS, turbo's, or about anything else.
Maintenance: ADJUST VALVES, your clutch will probably go out, and that is about it. Buy a service manual, it will alow you to do all the work on your DS.

Still on my orig. clutch and I have a lot of power adders.
Carb bowl screws - these are a 8itch to get off. Take the carb off the quad and use an impact driver to get them off. Once you have them off, replace them with cap head allen screws. These and everything on the bike are Metric so you will need to get metric ones.
Valve clearance - good call
Change the oil on a regular basis
Lube the Zirk fittings and depending on how much water you go into re-pack your bering carrier.
Watch the weep hole on the water pump shaft seals and if it starts to weep change it right away.
Get yourself some blue Loctite and keep it with you. Lots of vibration to work things loose. Check things that you have cracked the bolts / screws on to make sure they are still tight.
Good upgrades - On Dunes has great prices on Mr. HP endcap, RW clutch springs, full exhaust systems (I like the Ron Wood exhaust - a bit pricy but, great power), K&N air filter (with outerware).
Check out faq.f650.com for more info on the engine. This is probably one of the most solid and best built engines of any sport quad. It has been prooven in the BMW F650 for years.
Aftermarket parts are a little more expensive for the DS than the Yamaha or Honda's but, this bike is built to last.
After that you can always go inside the engine and put different cams in.
