Torque specs on clutch springs....need help!!
#1
Well I got my 40% stiffer springs in today to replace my 60%ers. I started torqing down one of the clutch springs and the manual states at 89 inch pounds. I kept turning to feel/hear the click and snap.. bolt sheared off. I cleared it out and tomorrow I'm on the search to find a replacement at a hardware store... but I tried it again to torque down another bolt but alas still no clicking (maybe torque wrench went kaput only after a few uses) and I just bottom it out. I don't want to risk another broken bolt. I know this sounds lazy and trying to side step here.. but can I get away with snuging the bolt? I know I torqued these down before but I somehow it doesn't click to that spec.

I bought a cheap torque wrench for $59. After I tightened them down I rechecked them with a 1/4" ratchet and they were just snug. If it were me I would go buy a cheap torque wrench and do it right. It's not worth having a problem for $60.

I have had the same result on various bolt inside the engine. I just back off the rating from say 89 in/lbs to 70 in/lbs, and then judge from there whether it is tight enough. Of course, make sure it is in/lbs and not ft/lbs you are using. I twisted off a couple cam holddown bolts and now I just snug them up good by feel.

it's inch pounds, and when i do it 89 inch pounds isn't much more than hand tight, if you went foot pounds that would be a reason to shear them off. i can't imagine them shearing at inch pounds.

Sandman I agree....it doesn't seem to be clicking I'm going to check the torque wrench and see if it's faulty. Hopefully I can get this beast running right
Just curious.. what is a good tool to remove broken bolts? I had an extractor/easy out but had problems with those.. is there something better out there?

since you are in there you might just want to remove the clutch mub, it might make the job easier. not sure about the broke bolt maybe go see mr sears? think i saw bob was talking about some new easy out thing.

A good set of chisels and a hammer usually work better for me. I haven't found a good easy out or better way to extract bolts yet.
