500 Automatic Transmission Question
#1
I have not recieved my service manual yet to look at. But, can someone who has a service manual or who has had to take the 500 automatic transmission apart give me an idea of what might be involved in taking it apart? I believe the tranmission case has to be split?
I need to replace the counter shaft in the transmission and am wondering how involved it is going to be. I snaped the end of the shaft off that drives the speedometer. I don't believe it will hurt anything with it snapped off but, the speedometer won't work. Its my wife's machine and she ain't happy with it being broke and you all know how the saying goes, "If the wife ain't happy...". Obviously you can tell she was not the one riding it when it broke.
Any information on parts such as gaskets, seals, etc. that might be listed in manual would be a great help. That way maybe I can order them and have the parts and manual here at the same time.
Thanks in advance.

Yes wtb, I have sort of. I got my manual in the mail and have read the part I need several times. It appears that I will need a high temp sealent for sealing the crankcase halfs back together. Also a clutch cover gasket, magneto gasket and I think I might also replace the v-belt cover gasket but I don't know if that is necessary or not. That is all the gaskets needed for the lower half . Then you also need a clynder gasket and a head gasket to complete assembly of the top end.
All together its about $150 in gaskets. I sure wish they made a rebuild gasket set for this engine so you wouldn't have to order them separately. I am currently waiting on parts. I am planning on doing the job in two days. One to take it a part and another to assemble it.
The manual is OK but I have someone to take digital pictures as we get elbow deep in the job. That way we can use them and the manual to put everything back the way it was. Hopefully I can post some pics after the job. I just have to figure out how to do that I guess.
I'll keep you posted.

I got the manual from my dealer in Washington State, $45 including shipping.
I also just got the first parts in the mail and it looks like the dealer threw in an oil change kit (no charge). So I guess I left that off the list. Their AC mechanic also threw in a note with his e-mail, and phone numbers on it in case I need to ask a question when I begin.
