Default How to make cheap, light, adjustable struts?

I want to make a set of height adjustable struts to run in place of my front shocks for sand drags. Has anyone built there own or have ideas how to do it or what to use? I am hoping to be able to buy everything at Home Depot or the hardware store.

Thanks for any tips!

Here's a simple idea. Heim joint on each end with big thread inserts. Grade 8 allthread and a hex coupler connecting them. You will have to go to a specialty bolt supply store the get the heim joints though.
