DS headpipe gaskets - stockers gotta go
#1
I've ran a few pipes on my bike, two slip-ons and one full system from RWR. I no longer run the RWR system for several reasons, none of which have anything to do with power. I require stainless in my riding, so I went back to the stock header (which flows nearly as well as any anftermarket anyway) and slip-on.
Well recently I took my stock header off to ship to Jethot for ceramicing, along with the entire tailpipe all the way to the aluminum muffler too, and upon removing the headpipe gaskets outa the head pockets I realized that they are HUGE man. they are twice as thick as the pipe wall and their inside diameter is way smaller than the exhaust ports even.
I recalled the copper gaskets that came with the RWR pipe, called up Elliot and got two in the mail today, free of charge. Compared them to the stockers - their inside diameter surface area is 30% larger according to Pi and his math buddies.
The stockers were so restricting, the ledge created by the amount sticking out into the exhaust ports was collecting soot like crazy, I damn near had to get out the shopvac to clean that mess up!! Bombardier, what were you thinking?? In all honesty, I expect to have to make jetting changes for the added flow I'm gaining, and I think the difference will be noticable in the seat.

Do keep us posted about what kind of gains you can see.
And also, I have torn into my carb once or twice now, not touching but just trying to figure out which is which. After reading this I notice you guys rejet a lot, due to different circumstances. Now I am by no means good with carbs, but I have found the pilot ans the main. Main is a 190 stock, and the pilot i think is a 40 or a 45. All I have is a trinity full system, and K&N with lid removed. I don't know where the needle is, but I can almost assure you that I am jetted wrong. How do you guys know when you are jetted right? whats this exhaust sniffer I hear of and how much is it worth? My 190 main sounds high, and unfortunately I don't know what my altitude is, maybe someone can help me with that also. I just want the most out of what I have. I hope someone can help. Thanks and good luck hightower.(maybe I shoulda started my own thread instead of this.......)

I'm just real particular about jetting, I have lots of work done, including portwork and aftermarket carb that is very easy to change jets in without removal, and little things like this can effect fine tuning. the gains I spea of may not be noticable by many, but can be by those perfectionist kinda guys.
As far as your tuning goes, check some posts on stock carb tuning, been a while for me and a stokc carb. but the 190 you run sounds close to what your pipe would want, but not sure, ask around. its difficult to explain how to jet, and what you feel for and look for, next to impossible I've found. odd though, you say its 190 stock - stokc jetting for a DS at sea level is 165, at least it was on mine.

I mean a 190 jet that came with the pipe, and stock as in stock carb and jets. By that I mean I have heard others saying a dyno jet 170 = a 155 something else. Just didn't make sense the way I explained it.
Where can I find a "siffer?" and for how much

one of the confusing things are jet sizes by company. A minkuni 190 jet is not the same as a dynojet 190. There is a chart somewhere, but I don't know where that shows the relationship. Most people with aftermarket exhaust run a 170 or 175 main if it is a genuine minkuni, and a 185 to 190 if it is a dynojet or similar. That is probably what you have.
Sniffer, my local fix it guy bought his for about $2500.00 That is probably too much for you to buy just for your stuff. It is amazing though and he rides the quad and it will give you a graph of the whole ride and tell you how rich/lean you are at any rpm under any load. most competant shops around here have them, but I don't know about up there.
