Default 400ex sitting for 4 years

my local honda dealer has a bran-new 400ex that has been just sitting there for 4 years. its a 2000 model and its just parked in a corner. i asked him about it and he said he'd take $4,700 for it. i'm thinking thats a little steep for a machine he cant unload on anyone. plus its 4 years old. he didn't even order in a new 450r because he said it'd just take up space like the 400ex is doing right now. so what shoud i offer him for it. and also is there anything that makes the 2000 400ex worse than newer ones.

Sounds like a small dealership. $4700.00 is too much for something he can't get rid of and is already 4 years old. I wonder what his original dealer cost was on it? The 2004 retail prices were reduced for certain Honda atv's including the 400ex. The new 400ex also has a larger sized carb. I would GUESS that you should be able to get a 2004 400ex for at least $5000. out the door. (including all cost)

I wonder if the $4700. incuded everything or did he plan to build the price back up. Always ask for the out the door price including all cost.

Tell him to order you a new 2004 400ex and you'll give him $4700. for it. Offer him $3500. out the door for the 2000. If he doesn't want to deal then shop at another dealer.

yep. that is way to high. he should take about $3800 max for it, even though its new. because once you buy it and try to sell it - you automatically are stuck with the on paper depreciation of a 4 yr old bike; if you buy it for $4700 and try to sell it, you will lose alot on it.

if he wants that much and wont come down to a reasonable figure then let him keep it. there are plenty of dealers out there that are discounting NEW 2004 models to that $4700 range.

he isnt moving it and hasnt for 4yrs - he might as well discount it just to move it. its not good to keep old inventory in a business (unless your business is specializing in old parts)

I just checked with NADA.com and the Low Retail is around $2515. and the Average Retail is around $3305.

If someone bought a new 400ex back in 2000 and parked it in their garage for 4 years. If that person went to trade it in. How much do you think that dealer would give him for trade in? (Even though it wasn't driven.) As little as possible and then the dealer would sell it for as much as possible.

Considering the NADA value, I wouldn't give over $3500. for it. If you go to sell it a month later. No one is going to care how long it took the dealer to sell it. They will just see the year 2000. Tell him you'll give him the current retail value for it. Or less.

LOL. No, that's not me. I was digging through some of my old stuff and found my 1987 April issue of 3&4 Wheel Action. There was an article about the Polaris.

It's kind of funny because there's a "Middleweight Shootout" between the Honda Fourtrax 125 vs. Kawasaki Mojave 110 vs. Yamaha Champ 100. I guess the 400ex and Z400 would be considered middleweight now.

I just thought the article was interesting so I used the picture. The retail of the Cyclone was $2548. back then.

The LT500RH had a retail of $3299.

It's just kind of nice to look back.
