Default 700 sportman shifting problem

I've got my father-in-laws sportsman 700 while he is out of the country. I believe its an '03. I don't have an owners manual for it and have no real experience with polaris atv's. The problem is that its a total pita to get it to shift into park. Is there some trick to this? Or is the shifter just clunky no matter what?

You got to step on the foot emergency brake. Its on the right side. Then with the brake depressed, it'll slide right into park.

That's right and it is notchy though and can be tough, just use the foot brake for all shifting, you must use it out of low, it will only go between rev. and low without the foot brake for plowing ease.

Also check that the bracket that attaches the shifter to the frame (the pivot point) isn't loose. My 2002's worked itself loose once and bound up the shifter just like you are describing.

there should be a decal that says depress foot brake to shift into high or park.
