Default Air intake mod.... need advice

I plan on replacing my stock airbox/filter with a K&N 3" conical filter that will be located in the old airbox location under the gas tank. Now here's where I need some opinions. I was going to trash the stock airbox and just "free air" the K&N filter. Now, even with a precharger on the K&N, is a "free air" type filter going to be too high maintanance (cleaning after every ride)? The quad is mainly driving in loose dirt but might get a water splash here and there.

Thanks in advance for any advice...

If you ride in wet muddy areas then I wouldn't do it..
Why not just remove the lid?

Good point I hit a mud hole and the water stalled the motor,in loose sand they work good, just make sure you clean the filter like the direction's tell you and only use the K&N filter cleaner and oil.DO NOT USE AND AIRCOMPRESSOR AND BLOW THE DIRT OUT YOU'LL RUIN THE FILTER.
