First ride with Dynatek CDI
#1
Went riding up at Tower City this weekend, first time out with the new CDI. Was with a friend who also has an 04 650. We both have new tires (Bearclaws for me, MudLites for him) and the EPI black spring with properly adjusted belts. He has the stock CDI.
My 650 starts much easier with the Dynatek. Usually need to choke it when cold, not anymore. Bottom end is improved, but not dramatically. It does pull better from a stop, as I smoked my friend off the line every time we drag raced. Front end comes up a little easier, but it's still not a wheelie machine. My biggest concern prior to using the Dynatek was that it would be harder to control when hillclimbing due to the front end coming up. That concern is gone.. climbed many hills (I love hills!) with no problems. In fact I climbed most of them in 2wd low. Just about the only time I used 4wd was for downhill engine braking and mudbogging.
Despite earlier claims, I found out the heat shield bolt still burns my leg. Ouch!
Being able to ride for 2 days without worrying about limp mode: Priceless! Worth the money in my opinion.

I found an easy fix for the burning bolts. Take a tube of High Temp black RTV gasket silicone, and put a ball on the head of the bolts ond smooth it out so that it looks good. The silicone does not transfer near as much heat. It still gets hot but not near as bad. My wife and oldest boy ride it often and have not been burnt since.
