Kodiak clutch problem?
#1
Looking for a little help with my '01 kodiak (4wd). My buddy was riding it last weekend and went through a mudhole. It was much deeper than we thought and sunk down pretty good, got stuck, and we eventually pulled it out. When we got it out, the ole' kodiak wasn't moving the way it should, so i thought the belt got wet. Well, there was water in the belt housing and we drained it the best we could. Put the plug in and she seemed fine. Then we noticed it wouldn't go over 20mph. It runs great from 0-20mph but after that, no speed and the engine just revs and revs. I took off the belt housing (dry this time) and noticed the belt wouldn't go more than half way down the clutch plate (the front one..not sure if that's the primary or secondary). I have no idea why it's doing this. It appears to be in high, but could it be stuck in low-gear somehow? I've had it in low before and never heard the engine rev up like it is. Worn belt? Should i scuff the clutch plates? HELP!!!

You need to take it apart again and clean it very well, the belt could still have mud/moisture on it, belt systems are very sensative to water, the smallest amount will make it slip. The best thing to do would be cleaning the sheaves(pulleys) with brake cleaner, even use some emory cloth to scuff the pulleys up a little wont hurt to get the glaze off, and I would re-grease the weights.
here is a link to a great how-to on the belt systems, this is for a Grizzly but Kodiak is no different...

If it's smoking out the exhaust, then you might have ruined the rings... (which means you didn't get the engine cleaned out enough, ie, ran it with water still in the oil... ) can't guarantee this is the problem... but it sounds like an extreme possibility...
