The '83-'84 250r were typically pretty reliable in stock form.
However at this point we are dealing with a three wheeler that is old enought to drink in most states.
If you want any ATV to be reliable, you need to do proper maintenance.
Inspect and repair things before they break.

A 250x, assuming you mean TRX250X, will be a little newer and quite a bit slower.

I ve owned alot of four wheelers and dirt bikes. I would think you would be very happy with a 250x. I am about done restoring one right now, and i like it enough to keep it for a long time. If you can get your hands one one for less then 1000, and its in decent shape i would buy it if i were you. They are much like 300ex, but i acutally like my 91 250x over my 2000 300ex. If i were you, i would part out your 3 wheeler on ebay. I am sure if you clean up the motor and sell it on ebay complete with the carb and wire harness you would bring in alot of money from someone looking to put it in an atv frame. and you could also make some good money selling the other parts. But use i used to ride 2 and four strokers and i stick just to 4 stroke motors now. and yes the other guy was correct about how you have to do the up keep to your atc. but i understand at 13, owning something that old, you dont want to work on it more then ride it! Sometimes it doesnt matter how easy and good you are to your toys.. they just wanna keep messing with ya! Good luck with everything!

I have had a 01 250 ex for several years now, I can follow anyone any where, when they get on it though I'm left behind. I can climb and it works well on tight trails, its just not as fast as I need now. Gonna get somethin else. I've been in 2-3 ft of water, jumped and bottomed out hard, mudded, pulled and this thing just keeps goin, never had a problem at all with it.
