Winch question for 2005 Sportsman 500 H.O.
#1
I am trying to figure out what I need. I know I need a special winch mount which I found online from KFI. What winch should I get?
Warn has a 2500 ci & 2500 CE whats the difference? What other brands and models should I consider? Polaris has the winch kit but for $479 dollars I will just stay stuck. I am afraid if I buy something online I will end up needing more parts and will end up costing me more in the long run.
What I want is a winch 2500 lbs, Rocker switch and Contactor. I will install myself
One more thing.. What is the red flag that is attached to the cable for?
Revision: Has anyone mounted a winch on a 2005 500 H.O. without going to polaris?

The 2005 Sportsman is pre-wired for a winch.........makes it really easy. I don't know if you need to get a contactor and a mount......but being pre-wired is a nice deal.
Ramsey also makes a really nice 2500 winch. You can get it with wireless remote or just the handlebar rocker switch.
I have 2004 Sportsman and I just bought a Ramsey 3000lb winch comlete kit with contactor, wiring, rocker switch and roller fairlead off of EBay. Al;so bought the mount seperately off of EBay. You may want to check it out......big savings and there are many to choose from. They are usually new in the box and you can buy mounts as well if you choose like I did. I went this route because my set-up installed by the Polaris dealer would have run me more than $700. I'll install it myself and save $350. I'll recieve this stuff this week.......It'll be a nice little project.
Good Luck, Bob

I've got the 2005 700 EFI and I put in the Polaris/Warn 3000 lb winch. Its a whole kit....the 3000 also comes with remote. The kit includes:
winch
mount
handlebar rocker
all cables
contactor
all mounting hardware
when they say the machine is prewired...don't let it fool you...there is a power and ground cable and a place to mount the contactor...thats all. Also, when they say it will install in minutes, it will, about 120 of them. I have pics of my unit on my pbase site, here are some:
remote mount location
contactor location
oh ya, there is 'ignition' wires already in the front access cover:
winch hot ignition wire
winch
handlebar mount Don't have a good pic of this, but if you look up on the left handlebar side (right side of picture) you will see the mount sticking up...
you still have to connect the wire to the positive battery terminal, its back by the battery, tied off to the frame. The other end connects to the contactor...also the negative and remote mounts connect to the contactor. You have to remove the front bumper (factory plastic), easy to do though. I've posted this install before. Last but not least, you have to cutout the plastic cover on the front or you can just take it off...
