1984 200x Carb question, need help
#1
Have a 84 200x I bought and I am working on. Just re-built the carb. Have the tank off (cleaning it). Put the carb back on and have fuel line in a cup of gas. Kick it and it seems I can't get the fuel to prime into the carb?? A shot of eather fires the engine for 2-3 seconds. What is the solution to get it to draw fuel? Sound like it runs good for those few seconds.
Thanks in advance.

I will keep you in mind. I have a feeling when I put the tank on and let the bowl fill, she will fire up.
Next is to determine the shape of the piston rings and head.
Question: I used a compression gauge and kicked it over 5 times, it read about 85-90 psi. Then put a little oil in the spark plug hole and did it again, seemed to go to about the same pressure, maybe to 95. What do you think? Book says 140 to 170 I believe.
Has a performance exhaust installed and I noticed when I was re-building the carb, the old piece on the main jet was stamped "122" while the replacement pack had two options, "105" or "108". I installed the 108. Did they beef the carb up with a larger jet? Is that how I read this??
Machine shows that it has been well used, but is decent shape. Need new rear bearings and a workover of the rear brake assembly.
Thanks.

Yea that compression is a little low, book states 156 +or- 14 psi. (stock 9.6 to 1 piston) If your using the "hold on type" just make sure you have a great seal {I had to have someone else kick it over while I held the gage to get a good reading} but if you used the screw in type, good to go.... Make sure your valves are not tight (.003 in) Yes you are correct on reading the jet. If they put a 122 in it, you may want to clean it with a pipe cleaner and put it back it. I would check and see if they put a aftermarket piston in it. I found mine by rotating the piston close to TDC and using a Q-tip with brakeclean on it to clean the top of the piston, it was clearly stamped ".030" and it had a slight dome to it, 10.5 to 1. The stock one is cuped.

I agree with thrash...check the valves and make sure they're adjusted correctly.
Wow, a 122 main seems pretty darn big!

Thanks for input.
I got the tank back on, and got it to run. Needs some adjustment, but engine sounds good. Quite a bit of smoke, but it is probably burning out the oil I squirted in the plug hole when checking compression. I am heading out of country for awhile, but when I am back, will do mybest to check the valve situation.
I need to first change the rear axle bearings, get that in order, then want to ride it a few miles to see if the smoking quits and re-determine if I need to do any piston/valve/ring work. Will be back with more questions. Thanks for the help.
