Default '04 1/2 500HO Sportsman Brake Question

I just have 9 hours on this atv and yesterday while I was gone my lovely wife decided to ride it for the first time. Well . . . . . . I had the parking brake on and she rode it a couple of miles like that. When I got home she said she didn't like the Polaris because it didn't have any power, lol. I went out and looked and discovered the parking brake still on. But now I have absolutely no brakes. My question is do you think she she ruined the pads or something more? Also I have never put pads on an all hydrylic system like this, is it a big deal? Thanks for any ideas you might have.

You need to pull the front wheels (Both) and look at the pads. The rear disc / caliper is on the right rear and look at the pads. Did the rotors warp or get chewed up? It is possible that the heat from the pads boiled the fluid, try bleeding the system.

The instalation is pretty straight forward. If you going to work on this at home rather than the shop, buy the service manual. It gives you pretty clear instructions and photos to help you. I would only purchase the polaris brand pads. I don't know of any after market that anyone has had any luck with standing up.

WHere is the best place to get a service manual? Do you bleed the system just like on a car? Thanks for your input.

I would call a dealer, I think they are $25-$50 but something you will use over and over again.

Yes, bleed it just like a car. It probably wouldn't hurt to flush the whole system via bleeding. The rear has two pistions, one that runs off the front brake handle, the second off the foot brake.

You probably already know this but if you would have put the machine in park and left the parking brake off..............

Sorry..

Here is a link for the parts and owners manuals. Service manual looks to be a dealer item or something you can get from polarisoemparts.com you'll probably have to call them for the part number for the service manual.
