2002 LT80 wont turn over-justr clicks-battery good

Does anyone know where the starter is on this thing(I am clueless about 2-strokes) and also how can I bypass the starter relay and try to jump straight to the starter to see if the relay is bad? Thanks!!---Oh yeah, the quad was running fine, then went to start it after sitting a few days, and just clicks. even if hooked to a jumper box. Has to be either the started, the relay(solenoid), or cdi. How should I go about determining what the problem is? Thanks so much in advance!

Lets check the starter and go from there. 2 ways::
1) Remove the gas tank and disconnect the starter wire (there is a plug in connection) then use a good 12 volt source and touch it on the metal inside the connection.
2) stand the machine up on the grab bar, slide back the plastic protection piece and apply 12 volt source there.
Make sure you ground the sourse to the frame.
If the starter is working, the battery may be bad.
The next thing would be the charging part of the stator may be bad, but I'd bet not. That's rare.

WoW!!Thanks for the great detailed info!! 2 questions real quick tho before I tear into this thing. First, I'm not sure what you refer to as the "plastic protection piece"? And second, are you Stephanie Partons dad??!!

Plastic~~ Your right, I didn't explain that well.
Directly on the starter where the wire connects. There is a lil soft plastic piece that protects the connection. You need to just pull it back so you can jump it there.
Nope, Angela Moore is my daughter. Steph is a good gal.

Ok, thats what I thought but wanted to be sure. Thanks again, and Angela Moore, wow you should be proud! All those girls that race at that level are just amazing. We have one locally here in the Iowa series (Kim Muzzarrelli) that is very fast and could, if she wanted, prolly compete at that level, but we perfer to keep her to ourselves! Thanks again and if I need any more help I will just holler!LOL!!

I had a similar problem with my 2001 lt80. After checking the battery, starter, and all eletrical connections, it turns out that these quads have little ciruit breaker (or reset) on them. It is located at the rear of the quad, to the right of the little black storage box. It's a white fuse looking thing, two wires go to it. Push on it and see if the quad starts.

Ok. I pushed this, and it did click, kind of like a reset on a gfci outlet would. BUT, I still had the quad all torn apart, and after I tested the battery today at work,(it tested perfect) I came home, put it all back together, and now, the relay wont even click. BUT when I jump from the pos. cable direct to the starter, it turns right over. SO.......Am I safe to assume that the starter relay is bad? I guess I could have a bad connection somewhere, but I tried to check them all that I could see and all looks well there. I guess I will buy a relay and if that doesnt fix it off to the shop it goes.

Could be a relay. Although, the clicking noise from the relay went away on mine too, after I reset the GFI. I would go through and clean all electrical connections. There is a reason that the GFI popped. Probably a gound that has a little corrosion on it. Also check the fuse that sits next to the relay. It may be blown. It sounds like the starter is ok, that will save you some $$$.

Ok, I finally got time to work on this thing. Heres the story. The battery tests good as new, I bought a new starter relay, unplugged all the connectors I could find on the whole bike and all were clean so plugged back in. Still nothing, but now, not even a click of the relay or anything, where as before it would click but not ever turn over. I can jump direct from the battery to the starter and it will fire right over. so starter is good. I have iot narrowed down to either the key switch or the push button switch, does that sound right? I mean, the power goes from the battery to the keyswitch, then to the start button which when pushed connects the contacts inside letting the ppower flow through to the starter relay which is powered and "switches the terminals to let the power pass through to the starter, then it should start, am I close on that one? how can I test the key switch and start button? Thanks!
