purchased used LT80
#1
I recently purchased a used 2000 LT80 that was supposed to have "only a bad starter". It is pretty rough but I don't have much in it, yet. After removing the starter and finding it to be good I thought I really got a good deal. Now I am not so sure. The engine would not run. It had fire and fuel so I checked the compression. It showed only 30 psi. The LT80 has been setting for some time. Is there something I am missing or am I in line for an overhaul?

You need at the very minimum 80 lbs for it to even start. A topend rebuild really isn't all that expensive as far as 4 wheelers go. Plus you will have a bike that runs like a new one. You might also want to check your clutches after you get the top end done. How are you trying to start it? Did it just have a bad battery or is there a pull start back up?

Thanks all, you confirmed what I suspected. As for trying to start, it does not have the pull cord but will turn over with the battery and starter. Spins but doesn't even try to fire. I did a little research and saw a place in Waterford, MI that will rebuild the top end if you send it to them. I believe it is called Lakes Motorsports or something like that. Is this the way to go or is it simple enough to find someone locally to do it. I am new to ATVs, live in NW Arkansasa , and have no clue how much to do myself and/or where to take it. Any help would be appreciated.

pick up a manual at your local dealer. If you have any type of mechanical knowledge you should be fine. Other than getting the cylinder checked you should be able to do it yourself. Or at least try it and if you run into any problems people here are always willing to help.

If you have a suzuki dealer in your area then just take it to them and they can bore, hone and fit you with a new piston. If you can work with tools and have a little knowledge of how motors work then you should be able to do it no problem. Like Voodoo said get yourself a manual. They can really make these things go a lot better.

Thanks again.
I do have a manual. (Internet and 60 bucks later) That's the first thing I do when I start one of these new projects. It looks pretty straight forward but if it can be screwed up I usually can screw it up. I found a dealer in the phone book and will check with him on the price and how much I could do versus him doing the whole thing.
I'm surprised at how quickly you all replied. That's great and I appreciate it.

No problem dude. My dealer did a package deal. He bored, honed, set ring gap, wiseco piston, needle bearing and all the gaskets for 125 bucks. I thought that was really good. All I did was just put it all back together.
