I own an 87 warrior that has never been rebuilt, just maintained and it still runs real strong (for a warrior.)

Suddenly i noticed a kind of clunking around when the quad is moving. If its sitting still, and revving its fine, and when im riding, it clunks, if its in nuetral and coasting it clunks. It seems like its coming from the front left of the motor possibly near the shifter or tranny.

It also seems like it clunks alot whenever im cruising to a stop and shifting down into first.

The quad still runs fine, but this clunking will not quit. Im sure it will prolly get worse.

 

could it be the chain?

 

i would check the chain first
my raptor chain drives me crazy with it's noises sometimes clanging on my skid plate

 

I think it may be the chain, how tight does the chain need to be?? there is some slack in it, but i dont know how much is needed.

 

on my old warrior i had a few funny noises....sorta a clunky sound when moving. One of them was the swingarm bearings in the frame were shot, literally not there so i had to pound those out with a chisel and sledge hammer and replaced those, that sorta fixed it. then when taking off or slowing down there was another clunk, the nut that holds the drive sprocket on the rear axle would continuosly loosen up as the axle spline was shot, monkey wrench and a 4 foot pipe on the end couldn't even torqe it down enough to keep it tight. I'd check into those things as well.

 

a total of 1/2 inch of slack.. 1/4 inch either way. to tighten loosen the top and bottom blots that hold the bearing carrier on and then looseen the locking nuts at the back of the carrier and tighten the bolts inward the same amount till it is adjusted correctly.
