I don't mean to sound like a jerk but did you have the reverse overide button pushed in? If not then the 4x4 won't engauge.

Mine didn't work once because mud was caked in the button.

Ditto, try pushing the yellow button that reads "override" next time. 4x4 will work fine. Don't feel dumb, I got hung up in some loose dirt and could only back up, and I was steeply pointed downhill. I slid all over the place trying to back out in 2wd. That was a long time ago LOL..

also, if pushing the botton does not work, check where the wires plug in. My got mud in there and prevented it from working.

Also, you have to hold the reverse override button in the whole time you are backing up. When my wife got stuck trying to back up out of a tough spot, and only had 2wd, I found that she thought that you just had to push the botton and release it to put it in 4wd in reverse...

Good luck,
Lorrin

make a reverse over ride that locks out the rev limiter and locks in 4wd if your in reverse and AWD is on

I did mine on my xplorer 250 in about an hour with the wiring diagram and a 5 pin relay
