2005 Kodiak 450 Changing Oil Filter Question
#1
Does anyone have any tricks when changing the oil filter without make a mess and getting oil all over the engine? I'm not impressed with the location of the filter.

bend a piece of cardboard that is 6 inched wide by about 12 inched long, bend it the long way in half. Then slide it under your filter and it will wedge in there and the oil will drain out and into your pail instead of all over your engine.

Humm... I just drain the oil out and put my oil filter cap on the filter and turn it out slowly. As soon as its free I turn it upright so no more oil comes out. Sure a little comes out when u brake the seal but I stress very little. Like a kleenex could get it all So no problems really!

You can use a nail, and hammer a small hole in the oil filter can, as the sump is draining. Do it on the end, and towards the top, and let it drain for about 5 minutes. This defeats the anti drain back valve, in the filter, and itll drain enough to unscrew it and get the filter out with out making a mess.
Its true that the oil draining back is unfiltered, but it came from the motor, just seconds before, and isnt an issue. Lots of autos have oddly placed oil filters, like the toyaota camry 4 , and this works for them too.

i have many filters to change every week. I have found it best to let it sit over night and let most the oil drain out of the filter. I don't let the machines warm up first like it says in the owners manuals.
