Default 05 500's leaking gas

Hi all, it has been some time since I was here last, But I have a ? I have had 3 500's on my time so far and I have a problem with a couple of the 05's with gas leaking out of the float bowl drain and the screw is as tight as it will go. It only leaks when you shake the atv when it is running or just sitting. One has 425 miles and the other I just got a few days ago and it does the same thing with 1 mile. Is this normal I mean the skid plate will have gas all over it. My 04 500 didnt have this problem if I recall. Thanks Hope some one can clear my head on this.

I was under the impression that the drain also has a passage on some carbs to the float bowl so that high float settings will cause fuel slosh. Have you check the float level?

Dealer tried to sell me a 05 500, he told me it was normal for a little bit of gas to leak out of the carb on these things. I have no idea why.

Hmmmmm, How do you check the float level? It not like a old car and turn a couple of screws. My dealer said that may be normal. So I called another and they said it may be to high of a float setting. But what are the odds on both of them? being purched almost a year apart? this should be on Unsolved Mysteries, Anyone out there with a 500 have the same problem? Thanks

You have to pull the carb, invert it and remove the float bowl screws (4 of them) and check it still inverted. It should be 17mm or .7 ".

I haven't found where it is coming from, but I smell gas quite often when I stop riding on my 05 500.
I have checked the gas tank over because of the recalls and it is not coming from there.

Pitkin 1, You may want to look at the same thing some of the 500 didnt have a drain hose on the float bowl drain it will leak on the starter moter near the exaust header and that is a hazzard, mine has that same gas smell, only I did have a defective gas tank it was on the mounting bracket molded in the gas tank I had it fixed and so far so good but I dont know about the gas leaking from this drain hose on the carb everything is tight and it is not the set screw. Thanks to all that have replyed.

i have an 04 500 auto and my carb does the same thing, leaks gas from the drain when you shake the quad side to side. i took it to the dealer and he adjusted the float and cleaned the carb, charged me $140 and sent me on my way. got home and the quad still does the same thing. i called the mechanic who worked on it so he went out on the showroom floor and shook a brand new quad and he said it does the same thing. i had to see for myself so i went to the dealer and done the test myself and sure enough the other quads done it too. doesnt seem normal to me.

Caper682, Thanks for your reply My mind is a bit at rest now well some what, But the thing that got me is my 04 500 didnt do that so I got my 05 and it started to do that and it opened a eye I have 422 miles on the 05, well as time went on I got another 05 with the yearend close out and that one started to do the same only with a leaky gas tank, But dealer fixed that in an hour. Now just the card issue, Thanks again
