Aftermarket CDI compatability? 2003
#1
Looking at replacing my stock CDI and some of the ones I'm looking at online are either stock photos or I have some mods to perform. I'm hoping that someone has the answer that has run into this particular problem.
On my 03 the CDI has one plug on top. there is another plug mounted using the rear CDI mounting bolt. Now the problem, the ones I'm looking at seem to have two plugs on top of the CDI, and they state that they are for the 03, but the plug I'm refering to that is mounted rearward doesn't seem like it will reach the additional plug shown in the pics I'm seeing. What is that plug that's not really part of the CDI on stock, and have you had to modify the stock cable to reach the AM CDI, if in fact it does go there?
Hope this makes sense and conjurs up some answers...
Thanks guys.

HA. OOPS.
My bad. No offense intended. I'd better go back and edit that before those that know you start razing!
Sorry Dude.
See, we need more of these get togethers so we can all get to know each other better. I do apologize.

No sir, not Baja, just a red and black DS650. Is the CDI different between the two models for 03?
Hopefully this will get some hits now since everyone is home from work.

Viper Red uses the same CDI as the Baja - The newer wiring harness.

So does anyone know what the second plug is that is mounted along with the CDI utilizing it's rear bolt.
Reasoning is that my CDI has one plug, some have two, and I'm curious as to if this additional plug is the same and just incorporated into the newer CDI boxes, or if it serves some purpose altogether different.
Thanks guys

WOW! All of this knowledge and nobody has an idea what that second plug is for.
Go figure.
Well, if I do find out through trial and error, I will be sure to let you guys know in case anybody else has this same problem.

I have a 2003 Baja, there is only one plug on the DS CDI. there may have been something else using that bolt for mounting, but it is not part fo the CDI. I'd suggest buying the Vortex CDI with the newer plug style and be done with it. The Vortex is a quality unit with no known issues, it works, doesn't have a spoken of failure rate and is reprogramable if you ever need to do something 'more' with it. What more could you need? It isn't the cheapest on the market, but the DS wasn't the cheapest either. If we all wanted cheap we would all ride Kawasaki Mojave 250s - those things sell for like $3500-ish new.
