Need help w/ 01' Raptor...?

I just did some trading on a 2001 Raptor that runs, shifts, & rides great although it seems to run a little wierd... When you try to start it with the starter, it sometimes spins free and doesnt want to crank over and the ACTUAL starter makes a funny sound. He told me that its the circle bearing that goes around the starter shaft or something? But it does have a very healthy sounding motor..
Also this Raptor idles and doesnt die, but it does try to die every 5 second intervals which is wierd. It almost sounds like it has an electrical problem and trys to quit firing every 5 seconds?....but it never dies, it only cuts out?
Any ideas on the starter and why it runs like this? Has anyone else had any problems like these?
Thanks,
Shep

Thanks man...I appreciate it, Ill look it up right now.....but do you have any idea why it trys to cut out while it idles? Its almost as if it quits firing for a split second.

The one-way bearing is toast. This was a common problem with the 01 Raptor. Your valves may be out of tolarance and that could be why it's cutting out. Also, the Raptor idels kind of high. If someone turned the idle down that may be why it's cutting out. That was also one of the main reasons why the starters went out. People would turn the idle down and when it died the motor would kick back and wreck the one-way bearing.

I also have a 01 raptor, the one-way bearings go bad on 01 - 05 they were all identical. Mine also went bad, i ordered a L&A one-way from Riper Racing the L&A is a much better and MUCH stronger design. THe bearing will run you 200$ unfortunatly. Also, my Raptor also does the 5sec "skip" it will idle all day and run great, but it will idle strong then every once and a while "burp" so to speak. Its just the way the raptor is. Like someone else mentioned earlier, the Raptor does idle quite high, i was comparing it to my friends 400ex and the 400ex idles mmmuuch lower, its just the way the raptor is designed. Set the idle low, but not so low that it cuts out when you give it sudden throttle. Hope i helped!
