ATVs in Books and Movies
#1
Greetings,
And now for something completely different.
I have been reading the book "Into the Wild" -- the story of Chris McCandless. He is the kid who chucked it all and went on an extended adventure, ending up spending several months alone in Alaska where he unintentionally starved to death. Incidentally, this is a great book that would probably appeal to many of the outdoor types who populate this forum.
Anyway, in one of the early chapters of the book, it describes a group of moose hunters making their way down an abandoned road to the spot of McCandless's camp. They start out in pickups and then switch to ATVs.
I can’t think of any other references made to ATVs in a book or movie. There are plenty of examples of snowmobiles figuring in a story (common on “Northern Exposure” and recently in “A Simple Plan”) but not ATVs. I thought it might be interesting to see if anyone else could identify similar references to ATVs in books, movies, or even TV (aside from ATV videos and the like). If you know of a book or movie that includes or describes the use of an ATV, let us know.
Thanks,

I just want to point out the obvious scenes from TV, I have seen ATV's used in lifeguard shows (eg. Baywatch) and many rescue shows showed on The Learning Channel, Discovery Channel, etc. Unfortunately, this is the only time I have seen them except for Quad Wars on TNN, which I personally think reflects bad on ATV riders. Frankly, I get excited when the new Yamaha TV commercials come on now.

I just happened to be flip through the tv and I saw a blond riding a Kaw. Prairie! I watched alittle more and dirtbikes started to chase her. Well, she looked good but she was riding on the road and off through the grass without a helmet, for some reason it didn't seem to bother me though.
The movie was on Cinemax and called I think it was "Return to Savage Beach" ??? It was a couple of weeks ago and it was not a kids movie, very action packed
if you know what I mean.

The movie was "Surviving the Game". It starred Rutger Hauer, Gary Busey, and Ice-T. Some rich guys (Rutger and Gary and others) give a homeless guy (Ice-T) a job and take him out in the forest where they tell him they actually took him out there to hunt him and kill him for sport. So they give him a day headstart and then go after him on (you guessed it) ATV's. It was an ok movie, mildly entertaining.

On Thursday night while watching the Yankees/Red Sox game, there was a Honda ATV commercial run. It was advertising the Rancher, and all the riders had the proper gear on. I got excited when the commercial came on.

Greetings,
I agree, I always get excited when an ATV commercial comes on -- sort of like we're part of a secret society that the rest of the world just doen't understand. And anyone else in the room kind of just rolls their eyes like, oh brother. Oddly enough, the few times I've paused at a WWF or similar wrestling show while channel surfing, I've seen an ATV commercial. What does that say about our demographics?
Thanks,
Rod

The music video referred to above is DMX's Ruff Ryder's Anthem. It is our (my riding buddies and me) theme song. Although it is mostly superbikes there is one Banshee, and it is awesome. There are a few more Ruff Ryder videos that feature ATV's. One by Eve has a guy riding a wheelie on a Banshee with two girls on the seat behind him and Eve on the handlebars. Most of the users here probably would not like the videos since they are rap, but who knows.
