I own an 86' honda 250 trx (utility model) and i am thinking about buying some new tires for the front. When i purchased the quad it had taller than stock rear tires on it already, so i was hoping i could get the front tires an inch or two taller as well. I think the current size is 20x7x11.
Does anyone have any suggestions on running taller (all-terrain) tires on this atv? What is the maximum size tire that will fit without any problems? Thanks for any replies...

I would check a service manual or check with a dealer first. I believe you will find the different sizes are for a specific reason. It may very well be that the gear ratio is different front and rear. If you go with a larger size for the front you may be putting your gear train in a severe bind.......Tass

 

If it's a 2wd model than you can put any size tire you want on the front, so long as it fits the rim and clearances the bike, frame and fenders with suspension compressed and wheels turned.

 

While taller tires may give a little more ground clearance, they will change your "effective" gear ratio. You will gain top end speed, but at the expense of low end power, so you have to decide which you prefer more. Being a shaft drive, you can't make up for it by changeing sprockets like you can on a chain drive.

Like already mentioned, if it is 4wd you will have issues with keeping things synchronzied when you mess around with tire sizes. I don't know about your particular bike, but my buddies old Honda 300 had different size (stock) tires on the front and rear.

 

he only talking the front tires...........speed is no factor.

 

if you go up on the front tire size, you are likely to feel a bit more tire 'roll' in the corners due to the taller sidewall

unless you go with taller rims as well

the added tire size will likely add a bit of stress to your steering components,,,,and the steering may feel a little more sluggish as a result

try and find a tire that isnt too heavy,,,,and go with smaller lugs as compared to large

I've been looking around and have another question...What difference will a flat profile tire make on the front? Which one (flat or rounded) will better serve this 2wd as far as steering goes?
My current size is 21-7x10 and i would like to get something like a 23-8x10. Any other suggestions?
