help with polaris starting prob
#1
So one day my idiotic neighbor thought it would be cool and see if he could start my four wheeler one day when i wasnt home. Pulled cord completely out of the pull starter. Is there anyway to wind that back up? I tried already but had no success. Also the push button doesnt work anymore, any way to figure out if its the actual starter or the solenoid? and one more thing, the quad runs but does not idle, i have to keep it throttled to keep it running. i adjusted the idle but it still does it. whats up with that? i think it might be running a little too rich. if anyone can help me out with the starter problem that would be great, thanks.

I can't help you with re-winding the pull start rope or your idle problem, but I can give you a few things to check for the starter.
First things first, is your battery charged?
If so check for voltage on both sides of the start button: Check for 12V btw. the (red/white???) wire going to your starter button and chassis ground. Then check for 12V btw the (white/red???) wire and chassis ground with the starter button pressed. You can also check for continuity on either side of the starter button with the button pressed and both wires disconnected. If you have voltage and continuity on these measurements, your starter button is working.
Next, check the starter solenoid:
When you turn the key, does the solenoid click? If it does, but doesn't turn the engine over, you probably need a new solenoid. If it doesn't click: With the wire disconnected, check the resistance btw the small solenoid wire and chassis ground. I don't have the spec, but I image that you should have ~5ohms. If this measurement is 0ohms or "open", you need a new solenoid.
I think it's likely that you'll find your problem with one or the above measurements, but if not, let me know and we'll take a deeper look.
