Problem with warn 424
#1
Hey guys, I've heard alot of great reviews about the Warn 424 selecter unit, and i went out a bought one a few months ago for my 01' Foreman. I found it dificult right from the beggining to take the atv out of 4x4. It slides smothly into four wheel drive, but I found it hard to take it out. Now that the cold weather is here I find it especially dificult to disengage the unit. I find that I eathier have to gun the engine then let off the gas or be on a incline to take the unit out of four wheel drive.
Anyone know what possibly could be going wrong with my 424?

I'm betting you have torque build up between the front & rear axles... if your front & rear tires are not the exact same size ( or exactly the right amount different, as in some of the Honda's ), they'll spin a different distance with each rotation, & will develope torque build up between the axles... this can be compounded by driving on concrete ( like pulling into & out of a garage ), & turning on a hard surface...
... I have problems with mine, because the retaining bolt came loose fron the disconnect unit, & spun around, wrapping up the cable to the point I had to cut it off... I'll have to see if Warn has another cable available ???

Ya, I've got 26" 589's on the bike both on the front and back. I see what you mean though, when I drive on hard surfaces it becomes easier to disengage the unit. It also seems that if you use it a few times, it gets warmed up,and becomes easier to disengage. I'm also wondering how serious the damage is if you engage into 4x4 while the rears are spining and the fronts arent. I've done it by accident a few times, and i'm wondering if this could be the cause of the problems I am experiencing?

I have experienced the same symptoms with mine. I have just tried to work with it though, and written it up to an inherent trait of the unit. My buddy has the same ATV as I do and we installed one on his too with the same symptoms.
I also had to disassemble the disconnect know and lubricate the detent ***** with light oil for use in the winter. The thick stuff from the factory was not allowing me to lock out of 4x4.
