Default wiring a lighted whip

on a 2006 400ex and a 2005 450r what wires do you tap in to? do you just pigtail the wires? what kind of connectors do you use? and how do you keep the connector on the bike waterproof when the whip is not installed?

I thought most of the lighted whips were stand alone, battery powered. But if its wired to the quads electrics...splice into the rear taillight wire...and that way when the lights are on, itll be on. You can use the scotchlock, wire taps.

if you tap into taillight wires, green is always ground on a honda, and the brown wire is running or tail lights. green wire w/ yellow tracer is the brake lite wire so don't use that. scotchlocks are a HUGE no-no at every dealer i worked at. they are unreliable, your just asking for trouble down the road. why do people use them? they are either lazy or don't know how to use a soldering iron. sorry if it sounds like i hate scotchlocks but i do because i've seen lots of electrical problems traced back to the things.

I dont have any complaints using the scotcthlock connectors, and wouldnt hesitate to use one here. If you want it to be disconnectable, but somewhat more permanant, then splice in a short wire, by soldering it, and have a spade connector on the end. Use the mating spade connector on the wire on the whip. Youll also have to rig up a ground wire, if it needs it.

No offence, but you need to come and work with me for a week, you would throw those away!!!!! scotchlok is meant for a TEMP fix ONLY!!!!! I have personally fixed thousands of dollars worth of damage done by scotchloks. I can see them working in the sand, but NEVER get them wet. I have gone as far as to try and smother them in dielectric grease, They still ROT apart. Use a heat-shrink connectors on ATV's is the only way to do it propper.

I agree, they arent for everyone. I still stand by them though...ive yet to have a comeback, or issue with them.

thank you, ThrashAndCrashUntilItsTrash. at least i know there are others out there that feel the same hatred i do towards scotchlocks. i do have a huge box full of them that i kept over the years and i'm still trying to think of something i can make out of them, like the worlds longest string of scotchlocks. what the heck, they're not good for anything else.
