What would an blown base gasket effect on an 86250r? Mine has been smoking really badly, and when I took it apart I think maybe the base gasket was blown, but it could have been from me taking it off.

 

A blown base gasket would cause the engine to suck in air, causing a more lean condition. You might see a little fuel/oil that is seeping out of the gasket area. I had this happen on my 82 ATC250R.
You can take a punch and make a small dent in the cases or cylinder on both left and right sides. This will pinch/grip the gasket better.

Id fix it, should only take you an hr or two and $20-30. Buddie has a cr500 that had a leak in the base gasket, one day it blew out and locked up on him in 5th... 5th on a cr500 is screaming...

Anyway, I ordered 2 new base gaskets, under the impression that running 2 will bump up compression. Is this correct? Thanks
