Default transmission jumping out of fifth gear

Hello, I've got a 2000 trx300fw and it sometimes when I am going up a slight incline or excelerating, the transmission jumps out of fifth gear down to fourth. The engine revs really high when it happens and scares the crap out of me! I just adjusted the clutch and it has happened before I did. I noticed this the first time when I was excelerating on a rode after riding through some snow. Is this something I can prevent or fix? Is it common?

Sorry to be the one w/ bad news, but if it only does this in one gear, then its the tranny. The engagement dogs are probably worn or a shift fork is bent. Once they are damaged, it will only get worse over time.

You weren't kidding when you said "bad news". What am I looking at in terms of $$$ to fix that. I would probably have a dealer because I've never opened a tranny. Despite the bad news THANKS alot!

Default transmission jumping out of fifth gear

when it does this "jump out of gear" thing, does that mean you have to work the shifter up again to get it back in gear?? or does it work fine again after you let off the gas?

If you dont have to touch the shifter, it might just be worn clutch discs and soft clutch springs. 5th gear is the highest gear and puts the most load on the clutch, and the clutch will slip if the discs or springs are bad.

but if it really goes down to 4th gear again, then it's probably a trans problem

It goes into to fourth gear but, I have to shift up to get it into fifth gear. I initially thought it was the clutch but, then I adjusted it and it did not help (It was not out of adjustment though). Will this cause other damage to the tranny like other forks breaking/bending or wearing the teeth on fourth gear? How many hours would it take an average mechanic to replace a shift fork? Thanks for the great help!
