1997 quadrunner 250 carb problems
#1
My quad started missing the other day, kinda like if you were about to run out of gas, and by the time i got home it would barely run. Throttle all the way down in first gear and maybe 5 mph, backfireing and running like crap. I have taken the carb off 3 times and completly cleaned all the jets, but never readjusted anything. Carb had black soot in it (I suppose from all the back fireing). I always have had problems with it idleing, just raised the idle screw a little each time. Got it to start but still ran like crap, wouldnt idle and was blowing a lot of black smoke, which means its too rich right? Now it won't start and just floods as soon as i hit the starter button. Dealer said its probley the floats adjusted wrong. Could this be the problem? He said to adjust you have to bend the little metal tab. Seems easy enough but want to make sure before i scew somthing up. Other than that it has always run fine. No white smoke just a little black smoke, slowly getting worse over time. What do yall think? Thanks a million!

Have you taken out your spark plug and looked at it or replaced with a new one?? I've had a similar problem and after about a minute of running after putting in a new plug, it was jet black.
Anyway.... my problem was..... and I'll quote myself from a previous thread:

............. it was the fuel petcock (SP) . . . the little thingy that turns your fuel to "ON" "OFF" "RESERVE". There is a little "O" ring in there that went out. And guess what, you can't just buy the "O" ring, you have to purchase the whole petcock.
I believe I paid around 80 crispy chicken nuggets ($80) for mine installed at the dealership.
They can test it at a dealership for you, (you may have to hint around about the petcock cause they will try to sell you a new carb) They have to check the vaccumm (SP) lines from the carb to diagnose the "O" ring problem I mentioned above.
Good Luck.

ok, here is my ten cents worth. Take your plug out and clean it up and lay it against the engine block and turn over your motor and check for a good spark if the spark is good then you need to pull your gas line loose and turn on the gas from the tank and make sure it flows freely if the gas flows freely then take the bowl off the carb and look for trash if no trash then hold the bowl up to the carb with just your hand just like if it were reinstalled. Turn your gas valve on and let the bowl fill up for a minute or so and then turn the gas off and remove the bowl and check and see how much gas is in it. You should have a little over half to 3/4 full if you have more than that you need to do want the shop told you and adjust the tab on the float remember a little adjustment goes a long way and then recheck it again by holding it up and turning the gas back on again until you get it right. take the air mixture screw on the side of the carb and turn it all the way in and back it back out 2 and 1/2 turns and take your air filter off and clean and re-oil it and reinstall and then try and start it up. If it doesnt run good you may need to take the carb back off and completely clean every orfice with carb cleaner and then use air pressure thru every orfice to make sure something is not stopped up dont forget the bowl has a hole in the bottom that the choke uses to pull gas make sure it is clear. If no results then you are going to have to start thinking about compression and valves and if it goes that far you will need a manual. I do have one and can maybe send you the pages you would need if you dont get it running.

and when your all done with that , and it still wont run right . Just remove the timing cover and see that the key way hasnt slipped. over torque can make this happen . if not they are bad for this anyway. but it will make it run real bad your lucky because most of the time if it slips, it cooks the piston. To fix this problem long as thre shaft is damaged. "new crank" but the flywheel is softer to prevent list. i always replaced the fw if this happened because it will just do it again. Locktite the keyway and fly wheel . use green not red loktite. and torque the nut to about 5 inch pounds under limit.
