Air filter question for 800
#1
Does anyone make an aftermarket foam filter for the Outlanders?
Second question: Went riding Sunday, very dusty. I replaced the air filter which cost $36. When I had a foam filter for the DS, I cleaned it after every ride. In dusty conditions, is this necessary on the Outlander.
Third question: The stock filter had no oil on the outer foam covering. When I put the new one on, I put a light layer of No Toil on it. Was this overkill or not?

I believe the owners manual tells you how to remove and 'clean' the cotton air filter that the outie comes with. You have to wash it, make sure it is dry and then oil the filter. The foam filter on the outside should remain dry. At least that is how I am reading the manual. It looks to me like the stock filter is a very good one.

You can clean the foam prefilter every ride, but you don't need to. I just rode 400 miles in 4 days in dusty dry Utah and the oil tacked foam filter I had on it was not discolored at all next to the cotton filter - of course the outside was pretty dirty. Ran good the last part of the 400 miles too. Twin Air makes an after market filter, but I believe what you have is what is designed for the engine and is a plenty good enough filter. I have an extra filter set, cotton and tacked foam that I carry on longer trips. I changed the filters on the fourth day, but really didn't need it. Was running good, no dust in the intake pipe that the filter clamps to.
