02 sportsman 500H.O. too hot to handle.
#1
My sportsman gets darned hot on the exhuast(right) side in the summer(now). So much so that I can't ride with shorts on! It has a heat sheild that works pathetically, I was wondering if this is normal or do I have a problem . Lotsa oil , antifreeze etc. The machine doesn't over heat it just gets hot on this one side? Maybe my exhaust is partiallly blocked? It seems to flow O.K. Any Ideas?

I'm not an expert but I would check your plug for color. If it white your lean. Lean will make that pipe get way hot. You could also try some exhaust wrap. On my drag car I could put my hand on the exhaust after a pass. It was hot but I didn't get burnt.

Where do you find exhaust wrap? What is the brand name? Sounds like a good idea to have especially since some people have some problems melting plastic on the newer wheelers. Is there any down side of using this wrap?

Would having my valves unadjusted effect the heat(some what retarding the timing)? I haven't done this since I bought it in sept 05 and who knows when it was done before that. Is this a difficult process? I usually work on my own vehicles any way.

the valve adjustment wouldnt have any thing to do w/ the heat issue. is this a new heat issue, i mean is it worse then it normally is? on my 500 and my 800 they both run hot enough so its not comfortable wearing shorts.
