Sportsman 700 drive train slop
#1
Hello, I am new to this forum and a new 06 Sportman 700 EFI owner.
WOW, this machine will go anywhere.
For the most part I love this thing but there is one thing that drives me crazy and seems to have gotten worse as I approach 26 hours with this ATV. There is slop in the drive train. I can grab the back drive shaft and rock it back and forth. This slop seems to extend into the rear end. When riding I keep hearing Clunk, Clunk, Clunk coming from the rear end. Is this backlash normal? Is there any thing to worry about? It can be heard in low high or reverse and also if it is just sitting there in park I can rock the atv back and forth and here the clunking sound.
I took it to the dealer at about 18 hour and he could here the noise. We checked a new one on the floor and It had some slop as well. The dealer told me to keep an eye on it to se if it gets worse, which I think it has.
Can anybody tell me if this is normal or is this something I should get looked at further before the waranty expires.
Thanks,
B.

well there is driveline slack to an extent, like when your decellerating and it sounds like theres rocks in your tranny, thats normal for the twins, but your situation dosnt sound normal.

I to have a '06 700 and it does the same thing. I also thought I had a problem and took it to the shop and was told to watch it, but after riding two different bikes I do believe that they all have that noise and play in the rear.

The twins are noted for their back lash clunk so that is normal. The slop in the axle where it goes into the rear end is in the splines and is also normal. I have 460hrs on my 500HO and the rear axles have been like that since new.....
