water problem on Kodiak 450
#1
hey,
I have a '04 Kodiak 450 and need some help... I was riding it saturday through some deep water, about rack high, and it quit. It would start and run, you could hammer the throttle and there was no response form the tires. I got winched out and SLOWLY began to get a little power back. The belt case was full of water, let it drain and still no power. The best it is so far is about 25 mph. this is at full throttle. It now accelerates like normal to about 15 mph then you accel harder and it gets to about 25, MAYBE.
I pulled the belt case off and there is a lot of thick grease around the clutch area, but I heard that is somewhat normal. When I rev it, I the belt rises and falls, so I was wondering if it was the belt that got stretched/worn or if it is a clutch issue?
Any help would be awsome, thanks.

You need to clean the whole area and belt, there should not be alot of grease, only about a teaspoon on each roller(weight) in the clutch. What you need to do is remove the belt by threading in 2 bolts(from the clutch cover) into the 2 holes in the secondary(rear) clutch pulley, this will let the belt loose to remove. Remove the front clutch, clutch cover (8 or so phillip head screws) & scrape out all the grease/mud you can around the clutch area. Then use some degreaser and clean out the clutch, and clean the pulleys with the degreaser, now sand the clutch faces with some sandpaper to roughen them up, the belt can also be sanded on the sides to remove the grease, I wouldn't use solvents or cleaners on the belt. Apply a tablespoon of waterproof grease on each weight. Now reassemble everything and you will be good. Any more questions, just ask.

so why does it only accelerate to about 25 before it sounds like its doin' 125? Is it because the belt is not grabbing anymore...? or the clutch is full of grease, but then it wouldn't grab at all right?

Its just the speed of the belt moving with the pulleys, its slow at start so it doesnt slip as much, but a soon as you give it more gas the pulleys will turn faster making it slip. I had the exact same problem with a Griz 600, it did the same things you say, I cleaned it up, re-greased and it ran like new.
